German watchmaker Hanhart has revealed one of its most unconventional creations to date with the introduction of the Square by Square, an experimental shaped watch developed in collaboration with Munich designer Marcus Wiedemann of Studio supercreative. Created as an entry for the Dubai Watch Week x Grail Watch Design Competition, the design was shortlisted in the “Most out-of-the-box, innovative yet viable shaped watch design” category. Inspired by historical case shapes found within Hanhart’s own archives, the Square by Square reinterprets those references through a distinctly modern, geometric form. Initially, only six prototypes will be produced—three featuring deep blue sunburst dials and three with shimmering mother-of-pearl dials—and Hanhart has not confirmed whether the concept will progress to series production.

The stainless-steel case measures 40mm from 12 to 6 o’clock, 38mm across, and just 10.9mm thick, with an unusually compact 32.8mm lug-to-lug measurement designed to suit a wide range of wrist sizes. A dramatically domed sapphire crystal extends to the edges of the case, creating shifting visual effects depending on the viewing angle, while the recessed crown integrates cleanly into the overall profile. The multi-level dial features a deeply stepped rehaut, newly developed applied numerals and skeletonised polished hands that align to form an elongated diamond shape at 12 o’clock.

Powering the Square by Square is the automatic Sellita SW1000-1 b calibre, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with an approximate 46-hour power reserve. As with all Hanhart mechanical watches, each movement is individually regulated in the company’s Gütenbach manufacture to its own in-house standard of 0 to +8 seconds per day across six positions. Water resistance is rated to 10 ATM, and the prototypes are priced at €1,890 including German VAT. Interested collectors are invited to contact Hanhart directly regarding availability.
