Apex of design
The Elliot Brown Beachmaster NIVO Professional is not just a watch—it’s a mission-ready tool honed to perfection over years of meticulous design and development. So original in its concept, its design and functionality were granted a patent, solidifying its status as the apex of Elliot Brown’s watchmaking expertise. While I was impressed when I first encountered Elliot Brown’s watches in the metal last September during the Toronto Timepiece Show, there is nothing like spending a little quality with one (or two) in the contemplative quiet of your own backyard. The Beachmaster NIVO was a great place to start.

Initially conceived at a Royal Marines event, the Beachmaster was refined into the most capable timepiece Elliot Brown has created to date. Its name, a nod to its military roots, is inspired by the Beachmaster–or the officer responsible for orchestrating disembarkation during an amphibious assault.

Key features of the Elliot Brown Beachmaster NIVO
Mission Timing Excellence
The Beachmaster stands apart with its unmatched mission timing capabilities. What do I mean by this? Well, imagine being 8 hours from mission start (“H Hour”). By rotating the click-lock split-scale internal bezel using the upper crown, you align the bezel tip to “8.” The GMT hand then begins its journey around the bezel, counting down to H Hour. Once mission start is reached, the GMT hand automatically tracks up to 12 hours post-mission start, making it an indispensable tool for precise operations–like storming a beach, or… getting that turkey in the oven on time and subsequently cooked to perfection. Your life, your watch.

The Beachmaster also boasts an external ceramic 60-minute unidirectional bezel for countdowns (rather than the typical elapsed time scales of most dive watches). Whether you’re timing the next phase of an operation or just waiting for your pizza to finish baking, it’s effortless to use: simply align the bezel’s luminous triangle with the minute hand and track the time remaining at a glance.

Rugged Engineering
Every detail of the Beachmaster has been discreetly ruggedized (yes, it’s a word; English is evolutionary)– shrugging off weaknesses typical in most watches. The 40mm pale grey sandblasted PVD stainless steel case houses an internal movement shock protection system, ensuring reliability in the toughest environments. Its waterproof rating of 300M/1000ft is no mere claim, either—each watch is tested individually.

The scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating provides excellent durability and legibility to boot. At the back, the bolted-down case back not only compresses the oversized seal but also ensures that the movement’s shock protection system is tensioned precisely. The case back’s design celebrates its military-inspired origins by featuring the Beachmaster wordmark, the NATO amphibious assault symbol, and an octagonal frame inspired by NATO battle space symbology.

Dial, movement & lume
The NIVO dial is a masterpiece of subtle design. The textured inner sector–inspired by the same NATO symbol for an amphibious assault that we find on the case back–is framed by a fine border that separates it from the outer sectors. The custom double-arrow GMT hand elegantly displays a second time zone via the inner 24-hour track while doubling as a reference for mission timing. And the use of X1 C3 and BGW9 luminous graphics ensures readability in all lighting conditions.

Powering this sophisticated tool is the Swiss-made Ronda 515.24H quartz movement, precise within -10/+20 secs/month. The independently adjustable 24-hour/GMT function further enhances the Beachmaster’s functionality as an everyday carry “caller” GMT.

Crown and bezel mechanics
One of the Beachmaster’s most impressive details is its bi-directional internal bezel mechanism. Operated via the hobnail upper crown, it employs spring-loaded ceramic ball bearings that click with precision into place. This mechanical ingenuity offers a tactile satisfaction that enthusiasts will admire. The crown itself is embossed with a triangle, ensuring quick visual differentiation from the time-setting crown, which bears the signature EB shield logo.

Strap and bracelet
This model comes on a “cut-to-fit” rubber divers’ strap with a double-fold deployant buckle so you can easily establish a secure and comfortable fit. I had the opportunity to try out several varieties last September; however, the model we received for review came on the brand’s Oyster-style bracelet. The robust clasp has a ratcheting mechanism that can operate as a dive extension or on-the-fly micro-adjust. It is also tactfully lumed with the brand’s logo. Both the straps and the bracelet come with easy-change screw-in strap bars. The socket heads make strap swaps effortless, and Elliot Brown ships the watch with the appropriate tools for the job.

Of Interest
The Elliot Brown Beachmaster Professional began as a challenge from a team of Royal Marines: to create a mission timer capable of counting down to an event’s start, then counting up to elapsed or rendezvous time—all without clutter or extraneous features. The task demanded a watch that was not only rugged and reliable but also carried the brand’s distinctive DNA. What followed was a three-year journey of innovation. After extensive sketches, prototypes, and nearly 5,000 words of legal documentation, the design was officially recognized as unique resulting in a UK patent for the aforementioned mission timing system.

Final Thoughts
The Elliot Brown Beachmaster NIVO Professional is more than a watch—it’s a finely tuned instrument born from military needs and perfected for both professional and everyday adventures. Its patented design, rugged construction, and mission-specific functionality make it a standout in any collection. Whether you’re diving, navigating time zones, or planning precise operations, the Beachmaster has you covered. And you’ll look good doing it.
This isn’t just a watch you wear; it’s a watch you rely on.
