Fierce from every angle
I have a small problem with folding knives. I often love the silhouette when the blade is closed, only to feel that the design loses something once it is open. Sometimes the opposite is true. The handle looks awkward in the pocket, but the knife suddenly makes sense at full extension. It is surprisingly rare for me to like both versions of the same folder.
The Pichi Design Kameta manages the trick. Closed, its low-poly handle looks compact, angular, and vaguely mechanical. Open, the 2.8-inch blade carries the same geometry forward into an aggressive modified Wharncliffe or reverse-tanto profile. The stonewashed blade, gold-foil carbon-fibre scales, and gold titanium shield on my review sample give it the appearance of a piece of equipment from a near-future film. I mean that as a compliment.

Pichi was new to me when the knife arrived, which made the discovery that the company is Canadian especially welcome. The brand describes itself as a Western Canadian team of industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and product engineers. Its roots stretch back to an outdoor excursion in 2020, when the group decided the EDC gear they were carrying did not suit the way they hiked and cycled around the Rockies. That background is easy to recognize in the Kameta. It feels like a product developed by people who enjoy taking things apart.

Some assembly required
That last point becomes apparent before the first cut. The Kameta arrived with its scales removed and required a little assembly. Normally, opening a review sample with parts still in the box might cause concern. Here, it is the point. Pichi calls its six-piece scale arrangement the Quick Versatility System. Two screws secure the sections, allowing owners to swap materials, colours, and individual panels without dismantling the titanium chassis or disturbing the pivot.
I enjoyed the process more than I expected. Installing the gold-foil carbon-fibre pieces gave me an immediate sense of how the knife was put together, and the tolerances were impressive. Each section settled into place cleanly, with consistent seams and no obvious rocking or mismatch. The gold titanium shield completes the configuration. Owners can also choose among FRN, G10, PEI, titanium, copper, and other carbon-fibre options. This is customization with a practical benefit: a damaged scale can be replaced without retiring the knife.
The carbon fibre does introduce a compromise. It looks excellent, feels dense, and keeps the knife light, but its polished surface is slick. That comes into play once the Kameta moves from photography prop to cutting tool. The handle’s faceted shape and the jimping along the spine provide some indexing, yet I remained conscious of my grip when pushing through heavier cardboard or drawing the blade toward me. Anyone who values traction above appearance may be happier with G10 or FRN.

A manual flipper with bite
The action is one of the Kameta’s best features. Press the flipper tab and the blade snaps into position with speed, a sharp metallic click, and enough feedback to feel through the handle. It is fast and responsive, but the appeal is just as much tactile as visual. You feel the detent release. You hear the lock engage. The entire motion has a mechanical finality that invites repetition. My wife has already survived my Mini Bugout phase, so she may be less enthusiastic about this discovery than I am.
In EDC language, the Kameta is a manual flipper rather than a spring-assisted knife. The blade rotates on phosphor-bronze washers. Those washers offer low-friction support around the pivot while keeping the mechanism thin, simple, and relatively easy to maintain. A detent holds the blade closed until pressure on the flipper overcomes it; the energy from your finger carries the blade through its arc. There is also a nail nick for a slower, two-handed opening, although the flipper is so satisfying that I rarely used it.
Once open, a liner lock moves behind the blade tang and prevents it from folding back into the handle. To close the knife, the user pushes the locking leaf aside and guides the blade home. I generally prefer a button lock because it keeps my fingers clear of the blade path and makes one-handed fidgeting easy. The Kameta’s liner lock nevertheless feels reassuring. Engagement on my sample was positive, with no uncertainty about whether the blade had locked. It also suits the knife’s skeletal titanium construction better than a button would.

What VG-10 brings to an EDC knife
The stonewashed blade is made in Japan from VG-10, a stainless steel developed by Takefu Special Steel. Its representative composition includes about 1 per cent carbon, 15 per cent chromium, 1 per cent molybdenum, 0.25 per cent vanadium, and 1.55 per cent cobalt. In practical terms, VG-10 can take a very keen edge, resists corrosion well, offers respectable edge retention, and can be sharpened without the diamond abrasives that some highly wear-resistant steels demand. The blade arrived extremely sharp. Cardboard, tape, plastic packaging, and cord presented no challenge during my time with it, while the stonewashed finish should disguise the small scratches that accumulate through ordinary use.
EDC enthusiasts will also know that VG-10 is a conventional ingot steel. The industry has moved toward powder-metallurgy alloys such as CPM-S30V, S35VN, S90V, Elmax, and MagnaCut, particularly as prices climb. Powder production can keep carbides smaller and allows steelmakers to use higher concentrations of wear-resistant alloying elements. Depending on the recipe, that can improve edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance, or the balance among all three. VG-10 will not outlast the most wear-resistant modern powder steels in a cardboard marathon.
That does not make it a poor EDC steel. Knife steel is a collection of trade-offs, and alloy name alone never tells the whole story. Heat treatment, blade geometry, edge angle, and the intended job can matter as much as the recipe. Pichi does not publish a Rockwell hardness or detailed heat-treatment protocol for this blade, so sweeping comparisons would be guesswork. What can be said is that VG-10 remains a sensible stainless choice for a compact daily folder: it gets sharp, stays sharp through normal chores, resists staining, and is manageable when it finally needs attention. This is a knife for packages, cord, food, and general utility, rather than prying, batoning, or other work that asks a fine folding blade to behave like a crowbar.

In the pocket
The Kameta measures 7 inches open, with a 4.2-inch handle and a 3 mm-thick blade. This gold-foil carbon-fibre configuration weighs 75 grams. It carries easily, and the deep-carry wire clip leaves little of the knife exposed. The clip is also removable, preserving the clean outline for anyone who prefers a pouch or loose-pocket carry.
The clip is the only component that feels less resolved than the rest of the knife. Wire clips have virtues: they are light, discreet, and usually gentle on fabric. This one does its job, but I would prefer thicker wire or a sturdier formed-titanium alternative. The Kameta’s chassis, scale fit, lockup, and action all feel substantial. The clip feels comparatively delicate. I would also welcome a reversible mounting option, especially on a knife whose modularity is such a large part of its appeal.

Final thoughts
I like the cyberpunk silhouette, light titanium structure, snappy action, and scale system. While this knife isn’t cheap, I believe that part of what you are paying for is the modularity of the design; it’s crafted around customization from the outset. And frankly, if you are new to the idea of scale swapping, this is a pleasant introduction that takes the mystery out of the equation.
The modular scales give owners a reason to engage with the object before they ever deploy the blade. The action adds the visceral click and snap that makes a good folder difficult to leave alone. Most importantly for me, the design retains its aggression whether the knife is open or shut.

The Kameta starts around $229 CAD and runs up to about $350 CAD for carbon fibre scales like those you see here. This configuration enters a competitive part of the EDC market, and some buyers will expect powder steel at that price. But there is value to be found elsewhere: a Grade 5 titanium chassis, precise modular construction, carbon-fibre scales, and a design with a clear identity. I would choose a more tactile scale material for hard use and a stronger pocket clip for complete confidence. Neither reservation changes the central impression. Pichi has produced an attractive, sharp, mechanically satisfying folder that feels different from the knives already in my drawer.
