Two Canucks walk into a bar…
Whitby Watch Co. and The Calibrated Wrist have shared a bond since the earliest days of both our ventures. We are, after all, two Canadian brands navigating the same space—one building watches, the other telling stories about them. Over the years, that connection has grown into collaboration and friendship. For that reason, it’s never easy to be entirely unbiased when a Whitby piece lands on my desk. Thankfully, the Alpine Chronograph makes my job simple—it’s a genuine value proposition and a watch that wears rugged, much like the nation that inspired it.

Key Features of the Whitby Watch Co. Alpine Chronograph
A Watch Born of Landscape
The Alpine Chronograph joins Whitby’s Ad Mare series, sitting alongside the dive-ready Ad Mare itself. While the earlier model drew inspiration from the sea, the Alpine brings its spirit from land—specifically, the great mountain passes of the Canadian Rockies. Its name comes from routes like Kicking Horse, Yellowhead, Sunwapta, Monkman, Howse, and Abbot. For anyone who’s driven or hiked through those regions, the design metaphor is immediately clear: the casework plays with surfaces the way nature does, clashing curves against sharp angles, flowing lines interrupted by sudden escarpments.
Whitby describes the Alpine as being shaped by both compass and cliff, from sea to sky. And while that might sound lofty, in hand it rings true. There’s a sense of topography in the watch’s form—of terrain made wearable.

Rugged but Refined
The Alpine Chronograph is not a small watch. At 44mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug of just over 50mm, it has a commanding presence. Yet, Whitby has softened those numbers with careful finishing. The brushed 316L stainless steel is punctuated by polished chamfers that catch light in a way that keeps the case from feeling blocky. It’s a design language that makes the Alpine feel as much at home on the wrist of a desk-bound Canadian as it does at the summit of a trail.
The bezel deserves special mention: a 120-click unidirectional sapphire insert, domed and luminous, giving off both a sense of utility and a jewel-like quality. It frames a double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, a combination that enhances legibility while delivering visual depth.

C3 Super-LumiNova® fills the indices, hands, and bezel marker, glowing with the intensity of a headlamp cutting through alpine fog. In practice, the lume is strong and long-lasting—reassuring for any chronograph meant to carry adventure credentials. Though, truth be told, I discovered its capabilities on my bedside table where it glowed softly still at 4am when I got up to use the little boys’ room. Same difference.

The Heart Within
Powering the Alpine is the Seiko VK63 Meca-Quartz, a hybrid calibre that combines the precision of quartz timekeeping with a mechanical chronograph module. It delivers a crisp sweep of the central chronograph seconds hand and a reassuring tactile “snap” when you engage the pushers—qualities that elevate it above standard quartz chronos. The movement also includes a day display, adding a practical layer of everyday utility.
For some purists, a quartz base may seem less romantic than a fully mechanical chronograph. But in a watch designed to be rugged, reliable, and accessible, the VK63 makes perfect sense. It balances durability with charm.

Built for the Elements
The Alpine Chronograph is rated to 200 metres of water resistance, a figure that puts it firmly in the “go anywhere, do anything” category. The screw-down crown, embossed with Whitby’s mark, helps ensure that security. On wrist, the included 22mm brushed H-link bracelet is solid, comfortable, and fitted with a clasp featuring on-the-fly micro-adjustment—a detail many larger brands still overlook.
And because Whitby leans fully into its Canadian roots, the Alpine arrives not in a standard watch box but in a custom-made Nanuk 320 protective case. Built in Montreal and fitted with foam inserts from Guard Dog Foam in Regina, it’s a packaging solution that feels purposeful rather than perfunctory—much like the watch itself.

Wearing the Alpine
Despite its size, the Alpine wears with surprising balance. The curved lugs and smart case design mitigate some of the 44mm presence, making it wearable even on wrists under 7 inches (like mine!). It’s still a bold watch, no question, but one that feels deliberate in its proportions. The overall impression is of a chronograph designed for resilience first, but not at the expense of comfort.

Final Thoughts
The Whitby Watch Co. Alpine Chronograph is a watch that tells a story larger than itself. It’s Canadian in every sense—not only designed here, but inspired by the landscapes that define this country. From the mountain passes of the Rockies to the coastal waters where the Ad Mare first set sail, Whitby has crafted a series that reflects both our land and our ethos.
For me, it’s difficult to separate affection for the brand from appreciation for the watch. But maybe that’s the point: Whitby has built something that makes Canadians proud, and the Alpine Chronograph is a piece that delivers on both function and feeling. It’s a rugged companion with a refined edge, a watch that embodies the phrase sea to sky.
