Orange is the new black
There’s something about a bold orange dial that makes a watch feel alive. Perhaps it’s because orange has long been a colour associated with high visibility and adventure, particularly in the realm of dive watches. The Isotope Hydrium California, with its more understated presence, has been one of my favourites from the brand, but “The Orange One” takes a very different approach. And as I sit here writing this review in the thick of a Canadian winter, with grey skies stretching endlessly and daylight slipping away too soon, I can’t help but appreciate how much a splash of bright colour can change the mood.

Key Features of the Isotope Hydrium BSMH
Case
At its core, the Isotope Hydrium BSMH “The Orange One” retains the same rugged construction that defines the Hydrium series. The 40mm 316L stainless steel case is micro-blasted for a matte, almost industrial finish. It’s a look that prioritizes functionality, reducing glare while also giving the watch an appealingly modern, tool-like aesthetic. The compact 48mm lug-to-lug measurement makes for a balanced, easy wear, while the 12.9mm case height (14.9mm with the double-domed sapphire crystal) ensures that the watch has enough presence without feeling cumbersome. True to its dive watch roots, “The Orange One” boasts a 300m water resistance rating, bolstered by a screw-down crown and a Hydrium screw-down exhibition caseback.

Bezel, dial, and crystal
One of the defining elements of the Hydrium series is its unidirectional 120-click stainless steel bezel. It’s a satisfying and functional component, and in “The Orange One,” it provides a clean, precise frame around the dial. The matte orange dial itself is a statement piece. The contrast with the black railroad track and the orange Isotope “i” hands filled with Super-LumiNova makes for excellent legibility. When the lume kicks in, the display takes on an entirely new dimension, glowing vividly in low-light conditions. It’s a reminder that beyond the playful and eye-catching colour scheme, this remains a serious tool watch.

Movement
Inside, “The Orange One” is powered by the Swiss Landeron automatic movement. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a 40-hour power reserve, it’s a reliable workhorse with a customized finishing that includes blued screws, Perlage, and Côtes de Genève visible through the caseback. It’s always nice to see a mechanical heart on display, especially when a brand takes the time to refine the movement aesthetically.

On Wrist
Wearability is a standout feature here, thanks to two excellent strap options. The watch comes standard with a single-pass Zulu Alpha strap, handmade in Liverpool, England. Over-engineered and tough, it suits the adventurous character of “The Orange One” perfectly. But for those who prefer a more traditional fit, the included quick-release orange or grey FKM rubber strap provides a snug, comfortable alternative. Either way, the 22mm lug width ensures that swapping straps is a straightforward affair.

Final Thoughts
The Isotope Hydrium BSMH “The Orange One” is a reminder of just how much a dial colour can influence a watch’s personality. Where the Hydrium California leans into subtlety and vintage charm, “The Orange One” embraces vibrancy and energy. It’s a watch that makes a statement, but not at the expense of functionality or wearability. For those seeking a dependable, unique dive watch with a playful side, this one delivers in full. And in the depths of winter, that bright orange dial feels like a beacon of warmth and fun—something I can’t help but appreciate.
