by Stephen Nichols

Playing the field

In the ever-evolving world of horology, few timepieces manage to strike a balance between rugged functionality and refined aesthetics. Enter the Canopy Field One—a watch that is working hard to redefine the field watch genre and to set a new standard for what enthusiasts can expect for well under a grand. After spending two months putting the the Field One prototype through its paces, I can confidently say this watch is worth a close look and may be worthy of your hard earned cash.

A Brief History: From Wake One to Field One

Canopy Watch Company made waves with their debut model, the Wake One—a bold fusion of pilot and dive watch elements crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The Wake One’s aggressive angular design and use of forged carbon touches set it apart in the crowded microbrand arena. Building upon this firm foundation, Canopy has introduced the Field One, a timepiece that inherits the distinctive design language of its predecessor while offering enhancements tailored for everyday wear.

Extra Note: I am told Machlen has a background in aerospace engineering so as you read see if you can sniff out the aerospace inspiration in the wake one.

Key features of the Canopy Field One

Design and Build: Aggressive Yet Refined

The Field One retains the sharp, angular aesthetics that made the Wake One a standout, but with thoughtful refinements. The case has been slimmed down to a 39mm diameter and a sleek 10mm thickness, ensuring a comfortable fit on a variety of wrist sizes. Crafted from Grade 2 titanium, the watch is exceptionally lightweight, making it an ideal companion for daily adventures.

One of the most striking features is the forged carbon caseback and crown—a direct nod to the Wake One. This material not only adds visual intrigue with its unique marbled pattern but also is incredibly durable. The seamless integration of these elements showcases Canopy’s commitment to blending form and function.

Dial Details: Texture and Legibility

The dial of the Field One is a masterclass in texture and readability. The granular surface adds depth, creating dynamic interactions with light that bring the watch face to life. SuperLuminova’s LumiCast technology is employed for the numerals, which are solid blocks of C3 X2 lume. This ensures exceptional visibility in low-light conditions, a crucial feature for any field watch. But fair warning this watch shines so bright it could pull double duty as a flashlight.

A subtle yet practical 24-hour scale is discreetly tucked away on the stepped dial, providing military time at a glance without cluttering the aesthetic. This thoughtful design choice reflects Canopy’s attention to the needs of professionals and enthusiasts alike.

I borrowed the black dial which is largely black and white but with subtle pops of red at the tip of the seconds hand and around the minute track.

The field one is also offered in red, orange, green and blue so whether you are a monochrome fanboy or love to play with color they likely have a well thought out colorway to suit your fancy.

Bracelet and Clasp: Comfort Meets Functionality

The titanium bracelet is a testament to ergonomic design. The hardness coated bracelet carry’s over a similar but slimmed down version of the ramped almost wing shaped links of the wake one. It also tapers gracefully down after it terminates at the convenient 20mm lugs, complementing the case’s proportions, and is equipped with a toolless micro-adjust clasp. This feature allows for up to 7.5mm of on-the-fly adjustment in 1.5mm increments, ensuring a perfect fit regardless of activity or environmental changes. Throughout my two months with the Field One, this clasp proved invaluable, offering comfort during extended wear and adaptability during physical activities, which for me means after my wrist swells from chasing my kids or eating too much BBQ.

Final Thoughts: A worthy successor

The Canopy Field One is more than just a watch; it’s a culmination of thoughtful design, quality materials, and practical features. It pays homage to its predecessor, the Wake One, by retaining signature elements while introducing enhancements that cater to everyday wear. After two months of rigorous testing, the Field One has proven itself as a reliable companion, seamlessly blending into both professional settings and outdoor adventures. And that is before the refinements they are promising for the production model.

Beadblasted @talkingabouttime

I feel compelled to bring up cons. Still, I am struggling to find anything meaningful. Titanium isn’t for everyone it is so lightweight the watch in the hands feels less robust than the wake one. Yet I know this is not the case considering the benefits of Ti and the hardness treatment. Also this is a through and through tool watch. The refinements are found in its design and execution. Still this is not a flashy watch. It is entirely beadblasted and matte finished. The only polish in this watch come from the tiny forged carbon cap on the crown and on the caseback. This is fitting for a field watch but it is worthy of mention for those seeking a expertly brushed and polished watch. That is not to say it isn’t sculpted. Canopy pulled off creating a clean angular design just with the utilitarian look of a bead blasted titanium case and bracelet.

For those seeking a field watch that stands out in both form and function, don’t sleep on the Canopy Field One. It is a compelling choice at a great price. Also dont sit around because canopy needs 60 preorders to make this watch a reality. I hope they get at least that because Its combination of innovative design, superior materials, and user-centric features make it a standout in the crowded field watch market.
