Here at The Calibrated Wrist, we first had hands on with Second Hour when Vincent Deschamps reviewed the beautiful and intricate Mandala Burst. Later, I had the opportunity, myself, to experience the capable Gin Clear Mk2 diver. Both demonstrate the development of a clear aesthetic from the Australian brand. The Second Hour Sattelberg Mk2 certainly adheres to, and furthers, this vision.

This second generation of the Sattelberg is a slightly dressier, upscale take on the watchmaker’s first field watch. Both, of course, commemorate Australian involvement in the eponymous battle which occurred on the Huon Peninsula of New Guinea during WWII.

Key Features of the Second Hour Sattelberg Mk2
If you are familiar with the brand, you will recognize that the slim-fitting case with its angled, fixed bezel remains unchanged this time around. It measures 40mm in diameter and 47mm lug to lug with a case height of 10.5mm, and a lug width of 20mm. The watch is predominantly brushed to a satin sheen and has also been coated with a surface hardening treatment which helps it achieve a Vickers rating of 1200. The unprotected, screw down crown and case back contribute to the watch’s 100m water resistance.

On wrist, the short, down-turned lugs make for a very comfortable wearing experience. As does the 7-link stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet is new to the Sattelberg and has been finished in alternating rows of brushing and polish. It has also been treated to match the hardness of the case. A special highlight is that the underside of the bracelet has been finished in the same way. The clasp is equipped with a toolless micro-adjusting system for increased comfort throughout the day. A leather strap option is also available.

The dial—as is often the case with Second Hour—is the highlight, and probably what will ultimately force your hand on whether or not to buy the watch. Unlike many field watches, which have a utilitarian sparseness about them, the Sattelberg Mk2 is far more intricate. It has been built in sector-style fashion, with a white outer chapter ring where we find a fully graduated minute track with box style markers on the fives. Stepping inward, we have a dark blue rondel with applied Arabic numerals in white. At the centre, we find a radially brushed disc with a gradient burst. A custom sword handset with an arrow-tipped seconds completes the look. Legibility is strong throughout, and both the numerals and hands have an ample treatment of Super-LumNova.
While we have the blue colourway on display here, the watch is also available in copper and purple.

The Sattelberg Mk2 is powered by the Japanese-made Miyota 9015. It has a 4Hz beat rate and a 42-hour power reserve. It promises accuracy within -10/+30 seconds a day.

Final Thoughts
Despite the shared case, there is little of the original Sattelberg in the new Mk2. But there is a lot more of the Second Hour DNA—playful dials, bright colours. This watch shares the robust build quality of its predecessor, but ultimately moves in the direction of sophistication. The bracelet is certainly a big step up. It is a watch with heaps of personality and presence. It wears well and features a workhouse movement, too.
