The Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition

It ain’t easy being green

Certain watches come by their nicknames honestly. The Hulk. The Starbucks. The Turtle. And the Samurai, for instance. Others are born with them–like the Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition.

This is the Disney collaboration no one saw coming. And now everybody wants.

Key Features of the ProPilot X Kermit Edition

Of course the watch features all the hallmarks of the ProPilot X Collection. A 39mm titanium case. A killer titanium bracelet with a clasp like no other. The in house Calibre 400 with its 5 day power reserve. Need I go on?

Only now it has a everybody’s favourite Muppet dropping in once a month, with a bright green dial to remind you when he’s not around.

I think it’s safe to say that this is Oris having a little fun. And why not? Perhaps it’s enthusiasts who take watches and watchmaking too seriously. The ProPilot X Kermit reminds us that this is just a hobby. Smile, for goodness sake.

That being said, the ProPilot X Kermit Edition is hardly a child’s plaything. I struggle to think of a more attractive contemporary design. When the ProPilot X was first launched in 2022 amid a field of vintage-inspired designs, it arrived like a breath of fresh air.

Angular, contemporary case design @calibre321

The angular blasted titanium case looks and feels industrial and utilitarian. The turbine bezel and matching crown make the watch appear as though it is an integral part of some unseen gear train. And yet, on wrist, nothing could feel as comfortable. It’s case thickness of 11.8mm seems to melt away, due in equal parts to the ingenious lug design and perfectly paired bracelet.

Through the exhibition case back, you have an unobstructed view of the in house Calibre 400, with its cutaway rotor, modern bridgework, and sparkling purple jewels. The movement is highly precise–promising accuracy with -3/+5 seconds a day. Its smooth 4Hz sweep also delivers a monster 120-hour power reserve, and it is extremely resistant to magnetic fields.

Innovative clasp @calibre321

The titanium bracelet is a minor marvel of engineering, as well. Its tight tolerances and subtle taper make for a superior on wrist experience. But the clasp is truly innovative, with its airline seat belt release. The only thing that could make it better would be some sort of micro-adjust.

The green dial, of course, is the story here. It really does pop. And, frankly, a watch dedicated to Kermit the Frog could hardly be any other shade of green. However, the combination of green with the printed white hour markers can be a little hard to read, at times. I realise that this is in keeping with the other references of the ProPilot X Collection. But the contrast here is not quite as strong, say, as that which we find in the blue reference, for example.

Final Thoughts

Like the Aquis, the Oris PrPilot X Collection is a bold, modern design. The ProPilot X Kermit takes this boldness one step further with its striking green dial. And on the first of every month, you’ll find it difficult not to smile. Oris can certainly hang its hat on the Calibre 400, as well. But these feats of engineering come at a cost. You may find that a concept watch north of 4K is a bit steep. Or that the printed dial is a bit of a let down after such care has been placed into the case and bracelet and calibre. However, you may also have a frog-shaped hole in your collection that can only be filled by the Kermit. And the on wrist comfort is second to nothing I’ve ever worn. If you like find things, and don’t like to go unnoticed, perhaps this is the watch for you.
