Daniel Craig may have let this one slip at the Planet OMEGA Exhibition in New York last November, but the design has now been officially unveiled and is available to the public.
The new OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch with lacquered white dial is inspired by the brand’s own famous heritage of space exploration. When the Speedmaster was first released in 1957, foremost in the designers’ minds was dial legibility—thus the stark white on black that we have come to expect in the Speedy Collection.
This latest iteration certainly suffers no loss in that department with a reverse colourway. OMEGA has added to this a striking red rendition of the Speedmaster name and treated enthusiasts to a glossy, lacquered finish. This technique is a first in the Moonwatch’s step dial.
More than a colourway
The inspiration behind this new look is none other than the appearance astronaut spacesuits—such as those worn during spacewalks. Fitting, in that officially, an OMEGA Speedmaster has graced the wrists of NASA astronauts since 1965.
In addition, this latest reference harkens back to another brand project from 1969. The ALASKA I prototype—part of the brand’s secret mission to create the ideal space watch—also sported a white dial. Research demonstrated that the colour offered a particularly effective thermal reflection coefficient. The new red text is a further homage to the protective red case that held the ALASKA I.

Key Features of the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch with Lacquered White Dial
The new piece measures in at a familiar 42 mm in diameter and is fashioned from stainless stee. It also comes equipped with a comfortable, vintage-inspired stainless steel bracelet featuring five arched links across each row row. The aesthetic is classic Speedmaster with a mix of brushed and polished details.
The watch can also be purchased on a perforated black leather strap, bearing red and white stitching, or on an anti-bacterial rubber strap. The later presents a moon surface pattern on the underside for increased comfort.
It might be worth noting that the black anodized aluminium bezel has also been treated to the famous “Dot over Ninety” on the tachymeter scale.
Powering the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch with white lacquered dial is the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.
