The mod squad
For someone who spends so much time around watches, my modding résumé is remarkably short. I once swapped the bezel on my Seiko SKX013. On another occasion, I assembled a DIY dive watch, if that counts. Beyond that, I have barely scratched the surface.
So when I tell you that swapping the module in my RZE UTD-8000-CKG took ten minutes, please understand the level of expertise involved. It was so simple a monkey could do it. In this case, one did.
I was already a big fan of the UTD. With the new RZE-8080 module inside, though, it feels supercharged. The watch I liked is still there, only now it has a few more useful tricks.

A little more under the bonnet
The RZE-8080 is the brand’s first digital module developed in-house. It powers the new UTD-8080 collection, but the part that caught my attention was its compatibility with the UTD-8000. Existing owners can get the new functions without buying another watch.
Those additions include Dual Time, multiple independent alarms and a countdown timer. Dual Time is an especially appealing prospect for travel, with a second time zone available to keep track of home. A countdown timer has plenty of less glamorous applications, too. Sometimes the most useful complication is the one that reminds you to check the coffee.
The module also brings an FSTN LCD. That stands for Film Compensated Super Twisted Nematic (say that 10 ten times fast), which is quite a mouthful for something intended to make a watch easier to read. RZE says the display offers greater contrast, darker numerals and improved legibility across a wider range of viewing angles. And I would agree. The specification also includes a 1/100-second stopwatch, a full auto-calendar through 2099 and the brand’s UltraGlow backlight. Power comes from a CR2032 battery, with an expected life of more than three years.
All of that now lives inside my UTD-8000-CKG. There is something particularly satisfying about adding capability to a watch you already own. I liked it before I opened it. Ten minutes later, I had another reason to keep wearing it.

Keeping the watch you have
The ease of the swap is a large part of the appeal. My previous adventures in modding hardly qualify me to offer a masterclass, yet this was a straightforward little project. Whether replacing an entire digital module earns me any credibility among serious modders is another question. I suspect my bezel swap still carries more weight.
What matters more is that RZE has made the upgrade possible. A durable titanium case should have years of use ahead of it, even as the electronics inside evolve. Giving owners access to a newer module makes good sense, particularly for a brand that has built a lifetime guarantee into the UTD proposition.
Owners who are happy with the original module can simply carry on. RZE says it remains covered by the lifetime guarantee, with no requirement to upgrade and no loss of support. That makes this an appealing option rather than an obligation.

Getting the upgrade
While I opted to perform the swap myself, RZE offers a service-centre upgrade for customers. That programme is scheduled to begin in January 2027, at US$100 with return shipping included, through centres in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore.
For anyone starting fresh, the new white Cerakote UTD-8080-ST is priced at US$399, with deliveries scheduled for November 2026. UltraHex titanium variants are listed at US$299, with deliveries scheduled for March 2027. RZE also plans to offer its module platform to other independent watchmakers, so this little digital engine may eventually turn up in some interesting places.

For now, I am quite happy with where mine has landed. My UTD has a new set of capabilities, and I have another modest entry on the modding résumé. I am not about to start setting hands or regulating movements, but I can certainly get behind a ten-minute project with this much payoff.
Further details on the module and the forthcoming upgrade programme can be found on RZE’s website.
