I had a blast
I sit here typing, reflecting on the last few years, the time I’ve spent connecting with so many creators, brands, and friends, and it all started with posting my Fossil watches back in 2016. Ten years later, I’ve had so many beautiful experiences, and one that I’m writing about now wasn’t on my bingo card for 2026.
You can probably guess by the title that this will be my last review for The Calibrated Wrist, as I’ve begun a new chapter in the horological world and am stepping foot into the brand side of things. I’m beyond excited for the opportunity, and I can’t express how grateful I am to have befriended some of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met.
This is a review, and the watch on my wrist is very fitting—a reflection of times gone by, how my collecting tastes have matured and evolved, and yes, those are marks I put on the crystal and engraved some memories in the acrylic. I’ve had this review done for the last week, and writing it has been tricky, but what better way to close this chapter than to write about one of my favourite watches: the Outline 3-6-9 Special.

The quest for the “perfect” watch
Now that I’ve gone through some tissue and can finally see my screen, I can finally talk about this. Yeah, I know, I’m a big sap, but the show must go on! I don’t think I need to explain the design inspiration behind the 3-6-9 Special, but if you need me to say it, it’s clearly an Explorer. There’s no question it’s an Explorer, and one with a “tropical” dial too—hell yeah.
My watch collecting journey has led me down the path of smaller watches, and I’ve been trying to find the perfect combination of size, movement, and aesthetics wrapped in a thin case with a domed crystal, and my God, I found it.

Key Features of the Outline Watches 3-6-9 Special
That’s more like it
I had the chance to review the Outline Series I Chronograph a couple of months ago, and while I did love it and it was a great homage to the Paul Newman Daytona, something felt missing, and I think that was the sizing, wearability, and movement.
The 3-6-9 Special is the closest I’ve felt to a “perfect” watch regarding sizing and how it feels on the wrist. When the team from Outline reached out asking if I wanted to check it out, I looked up the specs and saw everything I just talked about—a smaller 36mm watch with some classic styling, a stainless steel case and vintage-inspired bracelet, a minimal, domed crystal; it checked box after box after box.

The ’60s called, and they have nice watches
Let’s get a bit more nitty-gritty. The 3-6-9 Special is, once again, a 36mm case with a 45mm lug-to-lug and a 9.9mm case thickness, which excludes the 4mm domed acrylic crystal, making the total thickness 13.9mm. It’s a classic design from the ’60s brought back to life, and it feels vintage.
The bracelet jangles and features vintage-styled rivets; the case finishing is consistent and looks great across the board. The watch feels small, but the tall lug-to-lug fills in the gaps and balances its compact size, making it feel perfect on the wrist, especially for daily wear. I think this is the closest I’ve experienced to perfect in all aspects of a watch.
The 3-6-9 Special quickly took over my wrist time over the last month or so. To the team at Outline that sees this, I am so sorry for what happened to the crystal, but at the same time, thank you for sending me something I can put some marks on and love forever. It’s nothing a bit of polyWatch can’t fix. It hugs the wrist, sits perfectly under a shirt sleeve, and is such a classic and clean design that I can wear it when I’m relaxed on the couch having a beer, or throw it on with leather and a nice suit; I feel like a badass wearing it.

It reminds me of chocolate…
The dial screams vintage. That Hershey chocolate brown with the contrasting fauxtina indices and numerals all encapsulated under an acrylic domed crystal; it doesn’t get more vintage than that. In all seriousness, I feel this is one of the best Explorer homages I’ve experienced, and it feels like a vintage watch brought back to life. It’s highly legible, the font for the logo and subtext is clean, the sword handset is correct for the era; I can’t stop saying it, I love this watch.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the implementation of the Miyota 9039, which explains why the case profile is on the thinner side. I love Miyota due to its accuracy, reliability, and how easy it is to have serviced. I think this is such a great choice and a movement that will stand the test of time as long as you’re willing to get it serviced. I also think this watch would be incomplete without a great movement, and it adds some heft to an absurdly light watch. If it weren’t an automatic, it would feel like a toy, so good call, Outline.

Quibbles
I wish the bracelet wasn’t as jangly. I know that’s a funny thing to say after I just talked about how comfortable it is, but it’s a weird thing to experience. When you hold it in your hand, it feels flimsy and not the best in general; then you put it on, and the whole experience changes. It goes from “oh, this doesn’t feel the best” to “how does this feel like silk?” Now, there is a bit of stretch capability with the links, which does pull arm hair, and as a resident gorilla, I can assure you it does pull. Apart from that, the whole watch is great; I love it.
Side note, yeah, acrylic crystal isn’t the best idea anymore since sapphire is so common, but since Outline has kept everything consistent to the original designs of the era, I’ll let it slide.

Final Thoughts
Has this review been emotionally driven? Yes. Is there some slight bias because it’s everything I could ask for in a watch, wears great, and looks so damn good? Absolutely. This is as close to perfect for the price as you can get, and if you can get past the partial jingle-jangle of the bracelet, the wearing experience is top-notch, and I can’t recommend this enough. If you’re looking for a smaller watch in a tool/sports watch or a flat-out Explorer format, please check out the 3-6-9 Special.
The watch retails for around $425 ($580 CAD), and for that price, I’d say you’re getting a great watch, but I’m aware of the competition in that price range. Do I recommend the 3-6-9 Special? Sure do, and I’m honoured to have it as my last recommendation at The Calibrated Wrist.
Brent, if you see this, thank you. Thank you for the years, thank you for the connections, thank you for bringing me on board to experience so many great watches, make so many friends, and just have fun doing what I love to do; and for allowing me to go on my ADHD-driven tangents every now and then.
To Brent, Caroline, and Matias, and all our amazing contributors and friends—Stephen, Marc, Mike, Vincent, Trevor—thank you for giving me the privilege of working with such amazing and talented people.
As always, thank you so much for taking the time to read my thoughts and opinions on another watch. To you, the reader, thank you for being here, for supporting The Calibrated Wrist, and for being on so many amazing rides with me. I had a blast. Love, forever and always, Tyler.
