Texture & Turquoise
Galvin Watch Company is a brand I’ve known and been lucky to get my hands on since 2022. With their releases of the Loimu and SUVI, I was excited to receive the opportunity to check out the YÖ Limited Edition; YÖ meaning night in Finnish. The watch is designed to represent the night sky and reflect the aurora that colourfully cascades through the stars and darkness.
I’ve always enjoyed watches that convey a story or are linked to the mysteries of the unknown, like the aurora borealis. There’s a time when a story doesn’t always cut it. You really need to sit down, dissect the product, and build your thoughts around structure and tactility. I’m a romantic person, but even I have my limits.

Is there love in space?
I’ve been captivated by the night sky since I was a kid, obsessed with the idea of stars, planets, and the ever-expanding infinite cosmos. I’m in love with the possibilities of knowing that the unknown exists but not knowing how or why it exists, and the fact that nothingness is consistently expanding.
When it comes to watches, it’s difficult to design and capture that same essence of the veil. The closest thing I can think of from a visual perspective—and I’m not talking about the Speedmaster—is anything with an aventurine dial due to its sparkly and star-like nature. The YÖ has a more unique way of telling that story.

Key Features of the Galvin Watch Company YÖ Limited Edition
Stealth and elegance: Does it work?
Being unique in a space that’s quite saturated is no easy task. Combining materials seldom used from a “dress watch” design philosophy is no easy feat, especially when paired with a dial that holds so much texture and depth. I’m a big fan of blacked-out watches visually, but the ones I’ve owned in the past are no longer with me due to their dull appearance and lack of substance.
The YÖ is an example of combining the worlds of stealth and elegance: an understated case and bracelet, but subtly overstated in the dial. That lack of pop I mentioned seems to be remedied, at least from afar, but how does it make me feel up close and personal?

Matte Black Everything
The DLC-coated stainless steel case measures 33mm x 40mm with a 46mm lug-to-lug, and a thickness of 11.5mm. It’s the same shape and dimensions as their previous SUVI model, instead with a matte black finish. The perfect way to symbolize the nocturnal sky. It’s compact, feels great on the wrist, and as someone whose closet consists primarily of black, grey, or darker shades, the YÖ is a great choice.
I’m not usually a fan of the “tonneau” shaped watch case. I’ve grown surprisingly fond of this one due to its comfort and overall sizing. The 19mm rubber strap definitely helps with this, but it always hurts to see an odd size for a watch strap, as most of the straps I own are your standard 20mm, with a smattering of 22mm. Odd lug widths make finding straps difficult, but more brands are catering to them, so you’ll find something. I think it’s my brain that has a strong dislike for odd-numbered lug widths.

Reminiscent of the Aurora
The turquoise fume dial has so much texture, with deep ridges and details to look at endlessly thanks to the guilloché. The gradient of turquoise to black is cohesive with the matte black of the case and is a great display of how the northern lights blend in with the surrounding darkness.
I should mention the dial also glows thanks to C3 Super-LumiNova and is a great addition to enhance the wearing experience. However, the lume fades quite quickly and isn’t around long to admire. If you’re in a pitch-black room, sure, you can still see it, but the challenge of coating the deep ridges of guilloché is definitely seen on the YÖ.
The black hands and logo are a great way to blend everything together into one cohesive design, but they feel bland. I’m one who supports the love of matte black everything, but when it comes to watch design, I’ve often found it dull, and it doesn’t exactly stand out among the crowd.

Quibbles
In terms of comfort, the YÖ feels great, but it needs to look great too. There’s that unfortunate dullness that exists with matte black. I understand the purpose is to highlight the dial. If it were a polished black finish, that could add some additional elegance. Maybe a polished black polished handset paired with some Breguet-styled numerals. The watch feels like it’s missing a step or two to greatness. Again, it’s not a bad watch, but from what I’ve seen from Galvin in the past, it doesn’t hit the same.

Final Thoughts
I’m happy I had the opportunity to get my hands on the Galvin Watch Company YÖ Limited Edition. It’s a watch that will get the job done for many, but there are some things missing from the design that make it feel incomplete to a certain extent. I can see the vision, and I can feel the romantic aspects wanting to come to life, but it doesn’t exactly ignite the flame.
The price for the YÖ Limited Edition is $956 ($1,328 CAD)–a range with plenty of competition. If this is your thing, then feel free to check it out, but from my point of view, it’s a couple of changes away from a truly great watch.

Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts! Until next time, have a fantastic morning, afternoon, or evening, and I’ll see you soon!
