Sinn Turns 65: New 903 Ti II Anniversary, 903 St II A & G

By Brent Robillard

The 903 returns in steel and titanium

Sinn Spezialuhren turns 65 this year, and for the Frankfurt tool watch maker, anniversaries tend to be less about nostalgia for its own sake and more about revisiting core ideas with fresh engineering. The brand’s first appearance at Watches & Wonders this April feels like an appropriate moment to do just that. Alongside the limited 903 Ti II Anniversary in titanium, Sinn has also expanded the updated 903 platform with two new steel references: the 903 St II A (anthracite dial) and 903 St II G (green dial).

All three watches sit within a lineage that stretches back to Helmut Sinn’s acquisition of Breitling’s remaining stock and rights to the Navitimer in the late 1970s. It’s a story that has been told often, but it’s worth revisiting briefly because the 903 has long since moved beyond being a footnote in another brand’s history. Over decades of production, Sinn has adapted the navigation chronograph into something recognisably its own—more robust, more water-resistant, and increasingly shaped by the brand’s technical priorities rather than by heritage alone.

Evolution of the 903

That evolution took a meaningful step forward in 2024 with the introduction of the current 903 St II series. The most significant change is the redesigned case and bezel system. The auxiliary crown that previously operated the slide rule is gone, replaced by a bezel that can be turned directly at the outer edge. This may sound like a small revision, but in practice it simplifies the interface and cleans up the case profile. Sinn’s DSP (Dynamic Sealing Technology) makes it possible for the bezel to remain operable while still achieving 200 metres of water resistance—an unusual figure for a navigation chronograph with a slide rule bezel.

The movement has also been upgraded. All three of the new 903 references are powered by a column-wheel chronograph with a power reserve of approximately 60 hours. The architecture is traditional, the execution modern, and the finishing visible through a sapphire caseback. It’s not haute horlogerie decoration, but it’s honest, mechanical watchmaking that suits the character of the watch.

What continues to surprise with the 903 is not the functionality itself, but the way Sinn manages to hold a visually dense design together. Slide rules, logarithmic scales, three subdials, applied indices, and a multi-layered dial layout do not leave much room for error. In many brands’ hands, this much information would collapse into visual noise. Here, the layout remains legible and coherent. The balance between the outer bezel scales, the tricompax subdials, and the applied hour markers is deliberate, and it gives the dial structure rather than clutter. It’s a reminder that clarity in watch design doesn’t always mean minimalism; sometimes it’s about disciplined organisation.

Fresh colours

The two new steel references bring fresh colour to the updated 903 platform. The 903 St II A features an anthracite electroplated dial with a sunburst finish, paired with galvanically silver-plated subdials. The 903 St II G uses the same layout but introduces a green electroplated dial, which adds depth and contrast without turning the watch into a novelty colourway.

Technical chops

Both models use a polished and satinised stainless-steel case and retain the full technical specification of the updated series. So you still get 200 m water resistance, a directly operable rotating bezel with slide rule, and a column-wheel chronograph movement. These models also feature sapphire crystals on the top and bottom in the display caseback, as well as hybrid ceramic luminous elements on the hands, applied indices, and 12 o’clock numeral.

The hybrid ceramic lume is one of Sinn’s more interesting material choices here. By integrating luminous pigments directly into the ceramic elements, the brand achieves a higher concentration of lume and a more uniform glow. It’s a small detail, but one that becomes meaningful on a watch with this many dial components competing for attention in low light.

Titanium, Limited to 500 Pieces

The anniversary model takes the same updated 903 architecture and translates it into a more specialised expression. Limited to 500 pieces, the 903 Ti II Anniversary uses a high-strength Grade 5 titanium case, which should significantly reduce wrist weight compared to the steel versions. The dial is electroplated in a dark blue sunburst finish, with rhodium-plated subdials providing contrast.

Bridge between past and present

Design-wise, this reference deliberately echoes the navigation chronograph Sinn released for its 35th anniversary, creating a visual bridge between past and present. The core technical features remain the same as the steel models—DSP-enabled rotating bezel, 200 m water resistance, column-wheel chronograph, sapphire crystal front and back—but the shift to titanium changes the character of the watch. On paper, it reads as the more modern, more “engineered” of the three, and it’s the piece I’m most curious to experience on the wrist when I meet with Sinn in Geneva this April.

Looking Ahead

The 903 has always occupied an interesting position in Sinn’s catalogue. It’s one of the brand’s most recognisable designs, yet it also carries the weight of its origin story more visibly than most Sinn references. With the current generation, that historical connection feels less like an anchor and more like a starting point. The technical updates, revised case construction, and new materials show a brand that is comfortable reworking its own icons without flattening them into retro exercises.

I haven’t handled these new 903 references yet, so this remains a first look rather than a review. But on paper, the combination of improved water resistance, a cleaner bezel interface, modern chronograph architecture, and thoughtful dial updates makes this feel like a meaningful step forward for a model that could easily have been left untouched. For Sinn, celebrating 65 years with a watch that continues to evolve rather than simply commemorate feels like the right kind of statement.
