A Fresh Take on Dress Watch Elegance
For years, my watch preferences leaned heavily toward dive watches and tool watches—pieces built for adventure, with function-first designs and rugged construction. Even as recently as five years ago, I wouldn’t have given a gold dress watch much thought. But collecting is a journey, and over time, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to the refinement and quiet sophistication of well-executed dress watches. The purchase of my vintage gold OMEGA Geneve was a turning point, and now, with watches like the Beaubleu Ecce Lys, I find myself appreciating the art of thoughtful, innovative design in this space.

Key Features of the Beaubleu Ecce Lys
A Case Unlike Any Other
What immediately sets the Ecce Lys apart is its architectural case. Beaubleu has created something that feels sculptural rather than simply shaped. The scalloped case sides are a standout feature, adding depth and movement to the design while catching and reflecting light in an intriguing way. The lugs, integrated seamlessly into the case structure, continue this sense of fluidity, while the broad brushed bezel offers a striking contrast to the polished elements. It’s a bold design choice that keeps the watch from feeling overly delicate, reinforcing the sense that this is a dress watch with presence.

Measuring 39mm in diameter and 9.5mm thick, the Ecce Lys is well-proportioned for a range of wrist sizes. It wears comfortably and effortlessly, with the slim profile allowing it to slip under a cuff while still holding its own as a statement piece when worn casually. The finishing is meticulous, with a mix of brushing and polishing that enhances the dynamic geometry of the case.

A Dial That Plays with Light and Space
Beaubleu is known for its unique approach to dial design, and the Ecce Lys is no exception. The soft, gently grained alabaster dial has an almost luminous quality, shifting subtly in different lighting conditions. The absence of traditional hour markers (the Ecce Lys employs only minute markers on the fives) allows the focus to remain on the brand’s signature circular hands, which float across the dial like celestial bodies in motion. These hands can take some getting used to if you’re accustomed to conventional time-telling layouts, but once you adjust, they offer a distinct charm that sets the Ecce Lys apart from more traditional dress watches.

The gently curved sapphire crystal enhances this floating effect, amplifying the play of light and reflections across the dial. It’s one of those small design choices that makes a big impact, adding depth and a sense of layering that keeps the watch visually engaging from every angle.

Mechanical Heart – The Movement
Inside the Ecce Lys beats the automatic Miyota 9015, a reliable and well-respected movement known for its slim profile and solid performance. With a 42-hour power reserve and a smooth 28,800 vph beat rate, it’s a movement that aligns well with the watch’s design ethos—dependable, efficient, and unobtrusive. While some might wish for a Swiss movement at this price point, the Miyota 9015 is a smart choice that keeps the watch slim without compromising on accuracy or reliability.

Strap and Wearability
The Ecce Lys is offered on several strap options, but my review model came with the rose gold steel bracelet—a pairing that feels like a natural extension of the watch’s design language. The bracelet’s construction is excellent, with a refined taper that complements the case proportions. What truly stands out, though, is the infinitely adjustable clasp, which allows for a precise fit. This level of micro-adjustment makes a significant difference in day-to-day wear, ensuring the watch remains comfortable throughout the day, regardless of temperature changes or wrist swelling.

While the bracelet enhances the watch’s elegant formality, I can see the Ecce Lys working just as well on a leather strap for a more classic, understated look. But for sheer versatility and comfort, the bracelet is hard to beat.

Final Thoughts
The Beaubleu Ecce Lys is a dress watch that challenges conventions in all the right ways. Its architectural case, floating dial elements, and signature circular hands make it instantly recognizable, yet it never feels gimmicky. Instead, it’s a watch that rewards closer inspection, revealing thoughtful details that set it apart from more traditional offerings.

For someone who started their watch journey with tool watches, the Ecce Lys represents exactly the kind of dress watch that makes me appreciate this category more and more. It’s refined without being delicate, innovative without being over-the-top, and ultimately, just a pleasure to wear.
