Crafted in brushed Grade 2 titanium, the new Aqua Terra Worldtimer (220.92.43.22.99.001) measures 43 mm in diameter and 50mm lug to lug. It is also 14.1mm thick with a lug width of 21mm. However, despite its larger dimensions, the watch remains lightweight at only 94g. The case is handsomely finished, corrosion-resistant, and able to withstand extreme variations in temperature.

Nonetheless, the real story here is the dramatic black and grey dial, which is crafted entirely through a process of laser ablation from a single piece of Grade 5 titanium. Short laser bursts–also referred to as photoablation—were used to create both the intricate texturing and the colours. The only element not fabricated expressly from the dial material is the red, hand-vanished “London” text below six, which was applied afterward.

At the heart of the dial is a distinctively designed rendition of Earth as viewed from above the North Pole. Its continents are elaborately rendered in tones of gold and burnt copper in a realistic topographic relief map. This is encircled, in turn, by a 24-hour index which has been divided into day and night and spins beneath the sandwich dial. The outer ring displays the names of 24 major cities, which represent the different time zones.

A matte black, brushed ceramic bezel surrounds all and complements the tone-on-tone palette. Omega has opted for blackened hands and hour markers, as well. Both of these latter elements have been filled with white Super-LumiNova for a ghostly blued glow. The contrasting colours and well-executed details give the watch a sense of sophistication and depth, making it a joy to admire from every angle.

The Aqua Terra Worldtimer is powered by Omega’s METAS-approved 8938 Master Chronometer movement, with its co-axial escapement and silicon balance spring. The calibre demonstrates exceptional precision and accuracy and can withstand magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, ensuring uninterrupted performance in harsh environments. It has a 3.5Hz beat rate and offers a 60-hour power reserve. You can see this marvel of engineering through the screw down display case back—including its rhodium-plated finish and wavy Côtes-de-Genève striping.

Of Interest

Omega launched the Worldtimer in 2017 on the 15th anniversary of the three-hand Seamaster Aqua Terra. Known at that time as primarily a producer of sports watches and chronographs, Omega’s release of the solid platinum Worldtimer was an announcement of its intent to produce more sophisticated timepieces. Placing it in the discreet Aqua Terra Collection seemed an inspired choice. That first watch was equipped with a sapphire crystal disc at the centre of the dial, onto which a map of the world was hand-crafted in enamel. It was limited to 87 pieces. Since then, the Worldtimer line has grown to include seven models, including this titanium version and two new iterations in green PVD with 18K gold highlights.

Quibbles

Some might baulk at the continued use of a 43mm case; however, both legibility and functionality would suffer in a smaller package. And with such lovely craftsmanship beneath the glass, the Worldtimer is simply a case of where more is more.

The 21mm lug width, on the other hand, will certainly restrict aftermarket strap options. Omega does have dozens of NATOS and a series of 21mm straps of its own, but, of course, these come at a premium.

Final Thoughts

Getting a Worldtimer right is no easy task. There is a lot of information that needs to appear legibly on the dial. In the brief six years since launching the Aqua Terra Worldtimer line, Omega seem to have coalesced around a highly stylized, but purposeful design. This titanium reference, in particular, demonstrates a further commitment to pushing the process of watchmaking, not just through superior in-house calibres, but through arcane technological developments in both case and dial construction.

The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer is a fascinating timepiece that delivers both style and functionality in one elegant package. Its world time feature simplifies the task of tracking time across multiple time zones, and the Master Chronometer movement ensures unwavering accuracy. Whether you’re exploring new destinations or attending international business engagements, this watch would be a valued companion. If you’re a frequent traveler or simply appreciate exquisite craftsmanship, the Aqua Terra Worldtimer is undoubtedly worth considering.

Pricing will be $11,800USD for the titanium reference. For more information, please visit the brand website.

  1. It’s a Stunner but I would add one more quibble… It’s on rubber 🥲, for almost $12,000 and well over $12k after tax I would think a quick release Titanium bracelet would have been added to the package. If I’m a world traveler globetrotter, I’m probably going to events in the evening time dressed to the nines 999’s … Chances of me wearing a rubber strap to a black tie event… 🙌🏽 ZERO‼️ So unless I’m packing more watches along with me… this just became another overpriced tool watch that as you said becomes hard to find extra straps for do to the 21mm width. Here’s a possible opportunity for are favorite Uncle @unclestraps to corner the market… but until that happens, I’m just another observant. Can’t own everything my friend‼️😎

    1. If I’m honest, I view the Titanium iteration on the toolish side of sophisticated. It’s a Seamaster, after all. But I see your point and definitely agree that a titanium bracelet would knock this out of the park.
