On Spec: Farer Palmer GMT

Design and function are two of the most important aspects when creating a fantastic timepiece; you can’t have one without the other. Finding the formula to create an aesthetically pleasing watch that gets the job done and does it well can be difficult, but Bauhaus is the first style that comes to my mind in that category. For those unaware, Bauhaus design, a German artistic movement brought to fruition in 1919 by artist Walter Groupis, combines all artistic and design mediums into one beautiful piece. For decades, we have seen Bauhaus designs in watchmaking to create form following function designs. Farer has embraced the Bauhaus aesthetic with their latest release, the limited edition (150 pieces) Palmer GMT.

The Palmer GMT takes its name from English orientalist and explorer Edward Henry Palmer. From a young age, Palmer showed interest in other cultures and spent time studying Middle Eastern culture at the University of Cambridge. In 1882, Palmer’s journey would take him to the Middle East to secure the neutrality of Arab Sheiks during the Urabi Revolution. Palmer and his crew would be ambushed and killed during this time, and his remains would be moved to St. Paul’s Cathedral. this latest release from the brand seeks to commemorate him.

The Palmer GMT features a stainless steel case measuring 39.5mm in diameter, 10.8mm in thickness and a lug-to-lug of 45mm. As per many of Farer’s releases, the overall sizing of the Palmer dictates a comfortable experience on the wrist and is sized perfectly in regards to overall proportions. The case features two finishing styles; polished for the bezel and case sides but brushed for the lug tops, offering a hint of elegance with a casual style. The Palmer GMT can be worn informally daily but features enough glint from the polished bezel and case sides to be dressed up for fancier occasions—a perfect all-around option.

Bringing the Palmer GMT to life is the Sellita SW330-2 automatic movement. The SW330-2 is the Top Grade equivalent to the SW330, meaning the 25-jewel movement is adjusted and regulated in five positions to give the most accurate timing possible. The SW330-2 also features a 56-hour power reserve and a beat frequency of 28,000bph (4hz). The movement is decorated with the Farer GMT insignia and seen through the beautiful sapphire crystal on the back of the case. For more information or to get a Palmer GMT of your own, click here.
