The civil chronograph returns in white
Well, it’s about time (that’s probably a pun in this circumstance). But, frankly, the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick in 39mm was probably only a matter of time (see what I did there?). For years, collectors have been asking for a white-dial version of the classic 417 ES in its original size. Now it’s finally here, and it feels like a natural next chapter for a chronograph that has already earned its place as one of Hanhart’s most recognizable modern reissues.

What’s in a name?
The “Moby Dick” name comes from one of the rarest executions of the original 417 ES from the 1950s. While most examples wore black dials and leaned heavily into military instrument aesthetics, a small handful were produced with white dials and blued hands. These watches were born civil rather than martial, aimed at pilots, engineers, doctors, and professionals who needed legibility and precision without the visual language of military equipment. Over time, that white dial became something of a myth among collectors, earning its nickname after Melville’s great white whale and symbolizing rarity, restraint, and a slightly different take on the tool chronograph.

Key Features of the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick
The sweet spot
Seeing it return in 39mm feels right. This is the original footprint of the 417 ES, and it remains one of the most wearable chronograph proportions out there. At 39mm across, 13.6mm thick, and 46mm lug-to-lug, it sits comfortably in that sweet spot between vintage charm and modern presence. Anyone who has spent time with the 417 ES line will immediately feel at home here. Other than the dial colour, everything about the watch is unmistakably Hanhart.

The white whale
The white dial transforms the personality of the watch. Unlike the panda execution, it feels brighter, more open, and more refined without losing its instrument roots. The ivory-coloured Arabic numerals and luminous inlays add warmth and contrast, while the thermally blued hands bring in that deep, shifting blue that only heat treatment can produce. Depending on the angle of light, they will oscillate between subtle and striking, adding depth to what is otherwise a very clean and functional layout.

Where’s the red?
One of the most interesting changes is the bezel. Instead of the classic red marking that defines so many Hanhart chronographs, the Moby Dick uses an ivory-coloured Super-LumiNova insert. It’s a small change, but it completely alters the mood of the watch. The fluted friction bezel still rotates in both directions, but visually it now integrates with the dial rather than standing apart from it. The result is a chronograph that feels cohesive, more civil (?), and more elegant.

Familiar case
The case remains pure Hanhart. Satin-finished surfaces meet high-gloss polished facets with sharp, confident transitions. The fluted bezel, the signed crown with the historical “h,” and the high-boxed sapphire crystal all stay true to the original design language. The crystal, in particular, is beautifully executed, echoing the shape of vintage acrylic while offering contemporary scratch resistance and internal anti-reflective coating.

Calibre
Under the hood, the Moby Dick 39 mm is every bit as serious as it looks. The hand-wound Sellita SW510 M beats at 4 Hz, offers a power reserve of at least 58 hours, and includes hacking seconds for precise setting. Hanhart regulates every movement in Gütenbach to their own standards of 0 to +8 seconds per day, averaged over six positions, and never allows negative deviation in the main positions. It’s a very German approach to precision.

Daily usability has also been thoroughly modernized. A soft iron inner case protects the movement against magnetic fields up to 16,000 A/m, reinforcing its technical, tool watch credentials. Water resistance is rated to 10 ATM, making it far more practical than the now fragile vintage pieces that inspired it.

Final Thoughts
I’ve spent a lot of time with Hanhart chronographs over the years, and for those who follow the brand, this release will feel instantly familiar. The case shape, the bi-compax layout, the typography, and the overall presence all stay true to the 417 ES lineage. What changes is the tone. Where the black-dial models feel rugged and purposeful, the Moby Dick feels lighter on its feet, more versatile, and a little more refined. It’s still a tool watch, but one that wears its civil origins proudly.
For me, this is one of those releases that feels both fresh and inevitable at the same time. The 417 ES has become a cornerstone of Hanhart’s modern identity, and the Moby Dick simply broadens that story. It honours one of the most elusive variants of the original while making it accessible, wearable, and relevant today. We’re hoping to get one in hand soon, and if it feels anything like the other 417 ES models we know and love, this is going to be a very special addition to an already exceptional chronograph family.

Pricing & Availablity
The watch is offered on a calfskin leather strap with white stitching or on a stainless steel bracelet, both with 20 mm lug width. Pricing is set at EUR 2,290 on leather and EUR 2,490 (approx. $4050CAD) on bracelet, including VAT. Considering the level of finishing, technical capability, and historical grounding, it lands exactly where you would expect a modern Hanhart to land.
