Neotype LM02 Type C Panda and Reverse Panda: Vintage Flair Meets Modern Grit

by Brent Robillard

Dialed in

When Neotype launched the LM02 Type C Chronograph last year, it made an impression not by reinventing the chronograph, but by refining what a modern, French-designed tool watch could look and feel like. It was bold, tactile, and unapologetically functional. It was the kind of watch you could wear on a mountain trail or behind the wheel without thinking twice. Now, the brand has returned with two new iterations that inject a dose of vintage character into the series: the LM02 Type C Panda (1AC) and Reverse Panda (4A).

If the original LM02 was about asserting Neotype’s identity—all muscle, angles, and brushed steel—these latest dials show a more nuanced side of that identity. It’s as though Neotype has grown more confident in its design language and is now ready to have a little fun with it.

Key Features of the Neotype LMo2 Type C (Panda & Reverse Panda)

The Case

At first glance, not much seems to have changed. The LM02 Type C still looks like a motorsport chronograph—41mm across, 48.5mm lug-to-lug, and just over 15mm thick including the crystal. It’s a robust package with a 200-metre depth rating, screw-down pushers, and a 3.5mm domed sapphire crystal that makes the whole assembly feel bulletproof.

But on the wrist, it continues to surprise. Despite its heft on paper, the watch wears comfortably thanks to a smartly contoured mid-case and slightly raised caseback that keep the pushers clear of the wrist. It’s one of those designs that makes you forget the numbers—a reminder that dimensions rarely tell the whole story.

The brushed finish on the Panda version remains one of the watch’s most appealing traits, lending a soft, satin texture that balances the technical geometry of the case. And this time around, we are also treated to a gold PVD finish on the Reverse Panda. I really like the colour of this finish, which is not flashy but subdued and warm. The large fixed bezel, now with a polished sapphire insert, adds a subtle play of light without compromising the utilitarian vibe. It’s industrial, yes, but it’s also refined in a way only Neotype seems to manage.

The Dial

This is where things get interesting.

The new Panda and Reverse Panda dials take the architecture of the original Type C and give it a distinctly retro heartbeat. The sandwich dial construction—with a fully lumed disc beneath—now pairs with “old radium” Super-LumiNova that peeks through the cutouts, lending a warm, creamy hue to the hour markers. The main dial surface is an off-white on the Panda, contrasted by deep black sub-registers, while the Reverse Panda flips the palette for an edgier, sportier feel.

It’s a transformation that adds personality without straying from the brand’s DNA. The combination of modern materials, clean typography, and vintage colour balance gives the LM02 Type C a kind of timeless duality: modern in construction, nostalgic in spirit.

Readability is excellent. The surround on the hands, the crisp printing on the rehaut, and the colour-coded chronograph counters make for an intuitive dial layout that’s easy to read at a glance. It’s also an improvement in finishing over the 2024 release, with crisper edges and more precise dial printing.

The Strap

Neotype ships both models on a bespoke two-piece FKM rubber strap that feels every bit as rugged as the watch itself. It’s thick where it needs to be (4.8mm at the lugs) and tapers to a comfortable 2.8mm at the clasp, making it well-balanced on the wrist. The included olive green nylon NATO is a welcome bonus—one that gives the watch a more casual, field-ready look when you want to change things up. The hardware on the Reverse Panda strap is also matched to the gold PVD case.

The Movement

Inside, the LM02 Type C continues to use the reliable Seiko VK64 mechaquartz calibre. It’s a hybrid movement that offers a crisp mechanical chronograph feel with quartz precision and durability. It tracks elapsed minutes at nine o’clock, features a 24-hour subdial at three, and delivers roughly three years of battery life. It’s not exotic, but it’s practical—exactly the sort of movement that fits Neotype’s “modern tool watch” ethos.

Panda or Reverse Panda?

The Panda version (reference LM02C1AC) feels like the natural evolution of the Type C line—its cream dial and old-radium lume lend it warmth and a hint of vintage charm. The Reverse Panda (LM02C4A), with its black dial, white registers, and PVD gold case, brings a more dramatic, motorsport-inspired energy. Both are limited (150 and 75 pieces respectively) and both feel like they hit the sweet spot between collectible design and daily-wear utility.

Final Thoughts

Neotype’s latest LM02 variants show a brand hitting its stride. The Panda and Reverse Panda don’t rewrite the formula, but they do refine it. They show that Neotype can take a tool watch built for modern use and infuse it with vintage soul without compromising its rugged essence.

In a market overflowing with reissues and homages, that balance feels refreshing. The LM02 Type C remains one of the most distinctive mechaquartz chronographs in its category. And now, it’s also one of the best-looking.

Pricing & Availability

The Panda variation retails for €525 ($850 CAD), while the Reverse Panda with its PVD case is listed at €566 ($915 CAD). They have also been limited to 150 and 75 pieces respectively, and available now at Neotype’s website.
