Grand feu
Grand feu enamel is one of those things you can read about endlessly, but it isn’t until you hold it in the light—tilting it slightly, catching the way colour shifts across its surface—that it truly becomes real. That was my experience with the Selten Founders’ Edition Spiral Sunbird Blue. It’s a watch born from fire and patience, carrying within it hundreds of hours of work from artisans who treat dial-making as both craft and art.

Key Features of the Selten Founders’ Edition Spiral Sunbird Blue
First Impressions
At 39mm, the Founders’ Edition Spiral Sunbird sits in that perfect sweet spot: wearable on any wrist, balanced in its proportions, and slender at just under 11mm thick. But it’s the dial that commands your attention. The “Sunbird Blue” grand feu enamel shimmers with an uncommon depth—like peering into an ocean tide pool at dusk, where the light seems to bend and refract under the surface.

Beneath that enamel, the story deepens. Artisan Qin, one of Selten’s collaborators, spends five hours engraving nearly 700 individual spiral lines into each silver baseplate before a single layer of enamel is applied. It’s a painstaking, almost meditative process, and it ensures that no two dials are ever quite the same. Those engraved grooves act as a canvas for the enamel, creating subtle plays of shadow and reflection as the dial catches the light.

Forged in Fire
The enamelling process itself is equally demanding. Each dial may go through up to eight layers of enamel, fired repeatedly at 800°C in a kiln. Any slip, any imperfection, and the entire piece is lost. When it survives, though, the result is breathtaking: a glasslike surface of rich, luminous blue that feels almost eternal. After cooling, the dial is hand-polished to evenness before undergoing a final round of pad printing for its indices—delicate, crisp, and never distracting from the artistry beneath.
Even the hands undergo their own transformation. They’re heat-treated to a brilliant blue, complementing the dial while reflecting Selten’s insistence that no detail be overlooked.

On the Wrist
Despite the artistry, this isn’t just a watch meant to sit under glass. The 316L stainless steel case is cleanly polished, paired with a domed sapphire crystal that has seven layers of internal AR coating. The dimensions make it versatile: 39mm across, 45.5mm lug-to-lug, with a comfortable 20mm lug width. The case back is exhibition style, engraved with the serial number, and gives you a view of the reliable Swiss Soprod M100 automatic movement, adjusted in five positions to run within ±6 seconds per day. It’s a practical choice—workhorse reliable—meant to ensure that the beauty of the watch isn’t offset by fussy timekeeping.

The model I had came on a supple HasNoBounds handcrafted Epsom leather strap in taupe, which adds a quiet sophistication and frames the dial without competing with it. There is also a stainless steel bracelet available.

The Selten Story
Behind all of this is Leonardo Tsai, Selten’s founder, whose roots in watch-dial-making trace back to his family in Hong Kong. After a stint in finance in the UK, he returned home, determined to create something lasting—something “rare,” as the German name Selten suggests. His philosophy shows clearly in the Spiral Sunbird Blue: not just a watch, but a rare intersection of heritage techniques and modern execution.
Previous Selten collections, from the meteorite dials of the Series 00 & 01 to the patinated art dials of the Salvage Bronze diver, have shown the brand’s willingness to experiment. But here, in the Founders’ Edition, the experimentation gives way to refinement. This watch feels like the distillation of everything Tsai set out to achieve: beauty, craft, reliability, and a sense of individuality that mass production can never replicate.

Final Thoughts
The Selten Founders’ Edition Spiral Sunbird Blue is more than a timekeeper—it’s an object that connects you to human touch, to fire, to patience, and to a tradition that only a handful of artisans in the world still carry forward. On the wrist, it’s elegant without being precious, wearable without losing its aura of rarity.
Selten’s motto is “A Rare Kind, Not a Stereotype,” and with this watch, that feels less like branding and more like truth.

Love the Sunbird label on this colour, one my favourites birds and they have captured the special blue accurately!
Thanks for the feedback. It is certainly a beautiful dial.
A very beautiful watch, an unheard quality at this price point, what a deal.
I agree. The level of craftsmanship would certainly lend itself to higher pricing.
