Back to the Future with the First Omega in Space

Co-Axial Master Chronometer “FOiS” Speedmaster

Today, OMEGA released three new iterations of its emblematic Speedmaster, the ‘First OMEGA in Space”—now featuring a contemporary Co-Axial Master Chronometer. Still sporting plenty of its vintage cues, the new watch combines heritage detail with METAS certification.

Originally released in 1959 as part of the 2nd generation of Speedmaster, the now famous CK 2998 is joined by the 310.30.40.50.06.001, 310.32.40.50.06.001, and the 310.32.40.50.06.002.

Set apart from 1957 Speedmaster by its slim Alpha hands, dark bezel, and symmetrical case, the “FOiS” has become one of the collection’s most sought after models.

It was Wally Schirra who first wore the watch into space on the Sigma 7 mission in the Mercury Program. The year was 1962, and the chronograph was part of his personal collection. As this was three years before the Speedmaster would become officially NASA certified, the watch naturally earned nickname, “First OMEGA in Space.”

The new watch maintains its 39.7mm symmetrical steel case. It also features a dark bezel insert in black aluminium with the telltale tachymeter scale and the “Dot Over Ninety.”

The watch sports a new hesalite-form sapphire crystal, as well as a CVD-coated dial to replicate the tone of the CK 2998 references produced in the 1960s. The markers and hands are treated in vintage luminova, and the baton seconds hand is varnished white.

The brand logo appears on both the dial and crown. On the case back, OMEGA have placed a Seahorse medallion, alongside the inscriptions: “Speedmaster,” The First OMEGA in Space,” and “October 3, 1962.”

The biggest change to the design, of course, is under the hood. There, we find the Calibre 3861—a Co-Axial Master Chronometer—a notable upgrade in precision and magnetic-resistance.

The new SKUs include the FOiS on black or brown leather straps, and another on a stainless steel flat link bracelet with the newly patented comfort release adjustment system.

All references come in a specially designed presentation box with a “Legendary Moonwatch” leaflet on the inside.

  1. Molto belli i dettagli, preferisco la versione con cinturino in acciaio. Un modello da avere nella collezione
