A Minimalist Take on the Brand’s Proven Tool Watch
I have always had a soft spot for the Elliot Brown Holton Professional. When I reviewed the GMT version a few years ago, what stood out most was its complete lack of pretence. It’s a large, purposeful watch with serious wrist presence. The construction is straightforward and robust, and the design leaves little doubt about its priorities: legibility, durability, and practicality.
Now the Dorset-based brand has released a new interpretation of the platform, the Elliot Brown Holton Professional FDE, available through a short three-day pre-order window beginning Friday, March 13. Once the order window closes on Sunday night, the watch will be produced only in the quantity ordered.

Key Features of the Elliot Brown Holton Professional FDE
Flat Dark Earth
The defining feature of this edition is the dial colour: Flat Dark Earth, a muted desert tone originally developed for military equipment in the early 2000s. The colour reduces visual contrast in bright environments and has become something of an inside joke among the team at Elliot Brown, appearing previously on a few internal projects and accessories. This marks the first time the brand has released a public watch with the colour on the dial.

Sterile dial
Just as notable is what the dial does not include. The Holton FDE uses a sterile layout (barring the logo), removing all dial text entirely. The result is a clean display that emphasizes legibility above all else. Enthusiasts have long gravitated toward sterile dials because they shift the visual balance of a watch. Without branding, the watch feels more like a solid piece of kit.
That approach suits the Holton platform particularly well. The watch was originally engineered for specialist military use, and its case architecture reflects that heritage. The new edition simply pares the concept back to its essentials.

Case & Calibre
The case measures 43 mm in brushed stainless steel and is water-resistant to 200 metres. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial, while the unidirectional diver’s bezel is case-hardened to 1200 HV Vickers for additional durability. Luminescence comes from X1 C3 Super-LumiNova, applied to the hands and bezel markings for visibility in low light.
Inside is the Swiss-made Ronda 715 quartz movement, a reliable calibre that includes an end-of-life indicator to signal when the battery needs replacement.

Choice of straps & bracelet
Like other Holton models, the watch uses custom hobnail-knurled crowns positioned at 4 o’clock, along with screw-in strap bars designed for quick changes in the field. Buyers can choose between a solid-link stainless steel bracelet with ratcheting diver’s extension, a rubber strap, or a waxed raw-edge leather strap.

Love the Holton. This colorway, too. More people need to consider quartz.
