Noctua Watch Corp PD-1 and PDFL-1

by Brent Robillard

Tactical Timekeeping With Bite

In Vancouver, when I first met JP Ribeiro, founder of Noctua Watch Corp, there was a fully functional flamethrower sitting in front of him. Not the kind of thing you expect to find in at a watch show, but with JP, it felt entirely appropriate. It says a lot about him, and just as much about the watches he creates: function-forward, unapologetically rugged, and just a little bit badass. Noctua is not trying to impress the haute horology crowd. These are watches made for action, for the field, and for people who want a timepiece that does exactly what it promises to do—and no more. But what it does, it does very well.

About JP Ribeiro and Noctua Watch Corp

Noctua takes its name from Athene Noctua, the owl of wisdom and strategy in classical mythology. The symbolism is deliberate: a nod to intelligence, precision, and perseverance. JP Ribeiro, a former Canadian Forces member, founded Noctua Watch Corp. with the goal of blending rugged tool watch aesthetics with precise, no-nonsense execution. Every Noctua watch is hand-assembled in Canada by a single artisan (JP himself), and produced in small batches to ensure attention to detail and consistency. The company also donates a portion of every sale to Wounded Warriors Canada and the Wounded Warriors Project in the U.S., a testament to JP’s ongoing commitment to service.

Key Features of the Noctua Watch Corp PD-1 and PDFL-1

Case and Bezel: Industrial Strength

Both the PD-1 and PDFL-1 feature a 42mm bead-blasted case crafted from 316L stainless steel. At 13mm thick and with a lug-to-lug of just 46mm, the watch wears compact and comfortable despite its toolish presence. The screw-down crown at 3 o’clock is equally bead-blasted and feels securely protected, with a tactile resistance that inspires confidence.

The bezel is perhaps the standout feature. With a 120-click unidirectional action and a matte black ceramic countdown insert, the bezel’s precision and feedback are nothing short of outstanding. Every click feels like chambering a round—deliberate, clean, and solid. The insert is fully lumed with C3 Super-LumiNova, making it highly legible in low-light or no-light conditions.

Dial: Form Meets Function

The PD-1 comes with a matte black dial featuring high-visibility pilot-style hands and a date window at 4:30, all generously lumed with C3 Super-LumiNova. The PDFL-1 version removes the date complication and instead offers a fully lumed 3,6,9,12 dial, creating a dial layout that is as clean as it is bold. The lumed kanji chapter ring and logo add to the watch’s unique identity while remaining entirely functional. It’s an unapologetically tactical aesthetic that feels right at home on the wrist of a diver, pilot, or weekend warrior.

Movement: Dependable and Proven

Inside both watches is the reliable Seiko NH35A automatic movement with hacking and hand-winding. The black date wheel with lumed numerals on the PD-1 is a thoughtful detail that ensures visual harmony. While the NH35A may not excite movement purists, it is a proven workhorse that’s easy to service and trusted by microbrands and enthusiasts alike.

Straps, Bracelet, and Packaging

Each watch ships in a black Tactical MOLLE carrying bag and comes on either a black or olive green vented silicone strap with reinforced steel end links. The bead-blasted stainless steel bracelet must be purchased separately but adds to the overall utilitarian charm of the watch. With a 22mm lug width, strap-swapping is easy and opens the door to countless customization options. It might be worth mentioning that the bracelet features screw links and fat spring bars that are shared with the straps.

They feel like tanks on the wrist, built for durability, and laser-focused on delivering only what matters most. These are not watches that whisper. They are watches that get the job done and look sharp doing it. With strong brand identity, field-ready specs, and a founder who literally shares desk space with a flamethrower, Noctua is forging its own unique path—one bead-blasted case at a time.
