Discover Why Size Doesn’t Matter with the Paulin Modul D

by Tyler Frederick

Big things in a small package

Does size really matter? Brave question right out the gate, but we’re talking about watches; get your mind out of the gutter. I firmly believe people should buy proportionate watches based on their wrist size; smaller wrists stay within 36-39mm, larger ones can hit 40-43mm and so on. My sweet spot is 38-40mm. However, the more experienced I become, the more I realize watches can be sneaky–a spec list can say 43mm. You think, “That’s massive…” or 34mm and think, “That’s so small…” until you put it on and go, “That’s not bad at all!” then your whole view changes, and suddenly size doesn’t matter (right?). In September, I had the opportunity to check out the Paulin Modul A, which featured a bright yellow dial and a case size of 39mm. Well, they’re back with the Modul D Manual, which features a smaller 35mm case, and it’s been a blast to wear.

Key Features of the Paulin Modul D

As previously mentioned, the Modul A was the first watch from Paulin I checked out, and I fell in love with its bright colours and overall design inspired by Art Deco, Mid-Century, Postmodernism and the typography and numerals inspired by Dutch designer Wim Crouwel. The Modul D takes all that and puts it in a smaller form factor, downsizing from the 39mm of the Modul A into a 35mm case. It also features a black dial with blue, red, yellow and white accents, which I adore.

I’ll be honest: I was taken aback by the size, but when it showed up and I put it on my wrist, it felt so cool. It’s such a compact watch I couldn’t help but stare at my wrist, especially considering how thin it is.

The Modul D is the definition of compact from every angle. The watch features a 35mm tonneau-styled case, 6.2mm case thickness (8.2mm including the crystal), a 40mm lug-to-lug and a lug width of 18mm. It is the epitome of compact, melts to my wrist, and almost feels invisible sometimes; it’s one of the most comfortable watches I’ve ever worn. It sits so flat against the wrist, and the proportions are so balanced. Even though it’s a smaller watch, it’s one I grabbed repeatedly.

The dial suits the watch perfectly, and I much prefer this colourway as opposed to the yellow of the Modul A; both are gorgeous, but I’m a sucker for a black dial. Especially a black dial that implements colour in a subtle, minimal and clean way. The white numerals paired with the yellow indices, the white and blue hands, and the red hand in the seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock are all such a perfect contrast against the beautiful black backdrop and done so tastefully; 2025 reviews have started with a bang. I should also mention that the Modul D is powered by the manual wind ETA 7001.

Quibbles

Two things: one personal and one that Paulin already has available. The first is the fabric strap. I notice it’s slightly harsh and coarse, which feels scratchy if you have to adjust it on your wrist. I know it’s a minor quibble, but many strap options are available. Next is the implementation of Hesalite. Before anyone says anything, a sapphire crystal option is available, so all bases are covered.

Final Thoughts

The Modul D has been so much fun to wear and experience. From the aesthetic in the dial and case to the compact sizing and wearability, the Modul D has been such a treat and a watch that I can see entering the collection in the future. Long story short, I love it. I don’t usually wear watches of this size, and it’s fantastic. I want to thank my friends from Paulin for the opportunity to check it out. As of this review, the watch is out of stock in both Hesalite and Sapphire variants, which is no surprise, but you can sign up to be notified when stock is available. Pricing & Availability

The Paulin Modul D retails for £375 (Quartz) to £750 (Auto).
